Background – On November 30, Los Angeles County Sheriffs evicted Ynes Torres-Ortega and her family, despite a stay-at-home order going into effect the same day due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. The sheriff eviction process resulted in one child being taken to the emergency room. Shortly after the family’s displacement, one of the children contracted Covid-19.

The family was foreclosed on due to the apparent theft of Ynes’ mortgage payments by a purported debt consolidator. The family has made repeated efforts to get their home back, including offers of purchase. On Friday, December 18, as part of a traditional Christmas Posada, family members reclaimed the home and continue to reside there almost two full months later. In recent days, the company that foreclosed on Ynes has indicated a willingness to come to a purchase agreement.
