Getting to the Other Side of Through (John 4:1-4) // Sunday, October 29, 2023

Guest Preacher: Rev. Timm Cyrus

Pastor Emeritus Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

This is my 39th year as an ordained Minister of the Word and Sacrament!
I am an experienced leader in new church development, church re-development, and church transformation, and pastor emeritus of Angeles Mesa Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in Los Angeles, California. Currently serving as the Temporary Transitional Stated Supply Pastor at Community United Presbytery Church, Los Angeles, California.

Also, I’m a native of Louisville, Kentucky. Under the pastorate of the Reverend Rudolph Smith, I was ordained a Deacon and Elder at Peace Presbyterian Church.

Before God called me to serve in full-time ministry, I worked as a human relations specialist for the Louisville Board of Education. I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Bellarmine University and my Master of Divinity degree in Bible and Church and Society from Johnson C. Smith Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center. I served in the United States Navy as a criminal investigator at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba during the Viet Nam War era. In law enforcement, I worked with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Washington, D.C., and the Louisville Police Department.

I am currently a member of the Board of Trustees at the Interdenominational Theological Center and has taught Homiletics in their Extension Program and ministry for the Jack T. Rutledge Correctional Institute in Columbus, Georgia. In addition, I served as pastor of Beth Salem Presbyterian Church (1978-1983) in Columbus, GA; and First Community Presbyterian Church (1983-1993) in Sacramento, CA.
.
Long active in community affairs, I was one of the founders of the Martin Luther King Jr. Expo and Jobs Fair in Sacramento, California. I played a key role in organizing the King Day Ecumenical Service, co-chaired the first city-wide King Day Celebration, and was instrumental in honoring Dr. King by convincing the Sacramento City Council to rename a street in Dr. King’s memory.

Along with my pastoral duties, I worked as chaplain for The Sacramento Kings; served as Vice President of the National Black Presbyterian Caucus (NBPC); and two-term member of the Board of Trustees at Monte Vista Grove Homes in Pasadena, CA. I served as a member on the Planning Committee of the General Assembly when the former United Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Church (U.S.) united and became the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), and chaired the General Mission Council. In addition, I served as moderator of Pacific Presbytery and the Sessions of Westminster (Los Angeles, CA) and St. Paul (Cordele, GA) Presbyterian Churches.

Every summer for the past 37 years, with prayers and financial support from Pacific Presbytery, NBPC-Southern California, community grants, scholarships, neighbor donors, and in-kind donations from World Vision, I am privileged to help lead youth and young adults through an awesome plan that benefits inter-city youth to a mountain-top camping experience.

Together with Margaret, my sunshine and wife of 44 years, we have raised our four children with an abundance of love, educational opportunity, and support to their families. We are blessed with nine grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
