Opening Prayer (Wesley Covenant Prayer)

O God, Searcher of all our hearts,
you have formed us as a people and claimed us for your own.
As we come to acknowledge your sovereignty and grace,
and to enter anew into covenant with you,
reveal any reluctance or falsehood within us.
Let your Spirit impress your truth on our inmost being,
and receive us in mercy, for the sake of our Mediator, Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:1-7 (Common English Bible)

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I didn’t come preaching God’s secrets to you like I was an expert in speech or wisdom. I had made up my mind not to think about anything while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and to preach him as crucified. I stood in front of you with weakness, fear, and a lot of shaking. My message and my preaching weren’t presented with convincing wise words but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power. I did this so that your faith might not depend on the wisdom of people but on the power of God.

Definition of wisdom

What we say is wisdom to people who are mature. It isn’t a wisdom that comes from the present day or from today’s leaders who are being reduced to nothing. We talk about God’s wisdom, which has been hidden as a secret. God determined this wisdom in advance, before time began, for our glory.

Summary:

For two weeks in February and Black History Month, we explore foundations of faith from Black Heritage.

In this scripture, Paul encourages the church in Corinth to trust wisdom that has been hidden from the world. Wisdom that is a foundation of our faith.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What is a word, phrase or image that comes to mind when you read or hear the text?
  2. In this scripture, Paul assures the church in Corinth that his wisdom comes from God. What wise teaching do you return to as a foundation of your faith? Do you recall who you learned the wisdom from? How do you know that a lesson is wise?
  3. What does this scripture teach about Godly wisdom?
  4. What does God invite you to do, change or be through this passage?

Discipleship Huddle Questions:

  • How is it with your soul?
  • How does your soul prosper?

Closing Prayer

God who surprises us, help us to be surprised by an encounter with you. Keep us attentive to your presence as we go about our week.
